Chapter 9 Notes (Conceptual Art ~ Tony Godfrey)

Chapter 9 Notes – Looking at Others

  • -          Mel Bochner cared more about how we use photography to conceptualize our lives
  • -          More about analysis than the medium
  • -          How the photographs are used to make meanings
  • -          ‘The photograph is a lie’ ~ Carl Andre
  • -          Art is meant to be a direct experience
  • -          Has to be looked at from many perspectives
  • -          Huebler saw that people get self-conscious when looking into a camera but this can be helped by telling them they’re beautiful
  • -          Camera can be used as a ‘duplicating devise’
  • -          Different versions of reality
  • -          The title/text can relate an image to a particular reading
  • -          Thinking can be more crucial than the photograph
  • -          Both a critique of representation and a critique of vision
  • -          Colour – for holiday snapshots while black/white – art photography
  • -          ‘Narrative art’ – expresses emotions and sets off thinking
  • -          Advertising – shows myths and ideology of our society
  • -          Desire = a sense of lacking
  • -          Consciousness = the space we create around ourselves
  • -          Photography relates to the unreal of realism
